Our flight arrived in Curitiba early in the morning and while leaving the airport we immediately spotted one of the bust stops made for the busses in Curitiba. We took a long crazy cab ride to our hotel we checked in and settled into our rooms a bit. We mostly caught up on sleep and then looked for a place for dinner, which in Curitiba was all the same. Chimas, also known as a Brazilian steak house were the only option for food in the area, and although they are very good, it got a little bit tiring after eating it for lunch and dinner for three days. The steak house serves you an endless amount of twenty different entrees for a set price, similar to a buffet except the servers come to you over and over again. After our dinner, we reviewed Curitiba’s many sustainable practices and features to know what we are looking for the next day. Curitiba is the capital of the state of Parana and is a city focused on sustainability. Curitiba has one of the largest downtown areas in the world and two thirds of all garbage is recycled which is the highest rate in the world. All cans, paper and plastic are separated for garbage pickup and garbage that is not sorted is sorted after garbage has been picked up. Garbage sorting has created more jobs for people who are usually unable to get jobs such as being handicapped or elderly or uneducated and costs the same amount of money as a system that does not sort. Recycled materials are made into things from playgrounds to opera houses. The city has also created a green exchange program for poorer people that live in areas with small streets, too small for garbage trucks to fit on. The garbage truck parks at the end of the street in these areas, and people bring sorted garbage to them in exchange for items such as bus passes or produce, which encourages use of the bus system and assures that excess produce is not wasted. The bus systems is a system of rings that are color coordinated for different routes, each bringing people to different areas of the city. With designated bus lanes assuring no other bus traffic and assigned routes and schedules, Curitiba’s bus system efficiently moves 70% of the population each day on time and with little to no traffic. |

We woke up and packed our things to prepare for our flight that afternoon. At breakfast we discussed what we had seen the day before and noted things such as how this city had almost zero litter and how efficient all of the busses were run. We spent most of the afternoon walking downtown by the hotel to kill time before our flight to Iguassu.
